This very fine quality AS IS original ca. 1905 Newcomb Macklin frame was recycled and re-sized back in the 1950's-60's to accommodate an abstract painting. Measuring 17" x 20 1/4" overall it retains original size overall with original 10 1/8" x 13 3/8" reveal; the rabbet on the back was re-cut to 11 1/8" x 14 1/8".In the middle 1900's, some patches were made to the corners and the entire frame received a matte gray wash and some later gold overpainting at the corners and other high points. MOST of the gold visible through the gray wash appears to be the original gilt finish. As the images show, the frame retains fine, crisp details in many areas and has CONSIDERABLE loss to the gesso on the outer front edge (see close-ups). It is sturdy and usable and appears to be crafted of poplar and basswood. The back retains the original partial red ink stamp pictured.
